Se trata de una trilogía dirigida por el renombrado Peter Jackson, director en el pasado de la famosa trilogía , «El señor de los anillos» ambas adaptaciones de novelas escritas por J.R.R. Tolkien.
Esta trilogía se compone de tres películas que poseen una duración aproximada de tres horas cada una. Cuentan la historia de Bilbo Bolson, un hobbit de la comarca que en compañía del mago Gandalf y de trece enanos, emprende un viaje a través del país de los elfos y los bosques de los trolls, desde las mazmorras de los orcos hasta la Montaña Solitaria, donde el dragón Smaug esconde el tesoro de los Enanos. Finalmente, en las profundidades de la Tierra, encuentra el Anillo Único, hipnótico objeto que será posteriormente causa de sangrientas batallas en la Tierra Media.
La música de esta trilogía ha sido galardonada y vendida con mucho éxito debido a que la reacción del publico fue de adoración, uno de los temas mas importantes es el cantado por el artista inglés, Edd Sheraan, see fire, refiriéndose al fuego del dragón Smaug.
